Canada and the Congregation:
A Shared History

There were Sisters of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame in Canada long before it existed as a country.

17th century

in 1659 five French women begin the Congregation in Montreal, in Quebec.

18th century

in 1727 the first CND Sister, with two lay women, begins teaching girls in Louisburg, Nova Scotia.

mid-19th century

in 1841 the first CND mission is established in Ontario; later, Sisters open schools in New Brunswick and in Prince Edward Island.

mid-20th century

the CND spreads as far as the Canadian West, in Alberta, in British Columbia and in the Yukon.

You'll find many of us in the vicinity of larger cities as well as in much smaller towns and villages, dedicating ourselves to various works.
