Open House at the Former Notre Dame Convent, Charlottetown

Marie Hagen, CND

Sydney Inn and Suites, Charlottetown: Last Saturday and Sunday afternoon, sisters and former students were invited to visit our former Notre Dame Convent, now known as Sydney Inn and Suites. This invitation was indeed a gesture of solidarity on the part of the new ownership with all those who have had affiliation with it over the years, and was much appreciated by all who attended.

The General Manager, Gordon MacPherson, warmly welcomed us and described the efforts of the new ownership in transforming the building we knew into the five-star hotel and suites it is now. He mentioned the insistence on being as faithful as possible to the history of the building; for example, in the display of student graduation pictures from 1952 until the school closed. As we toured the suites and rooms available for visiting, we marveled at the beauty and design of it all, and recalled, as much as we could, what was in that particular place during our time there. We also enjoyed the refreshments, during which we shared memories and stories of our time at Notre Dame. The general feeling was one of gratitude that the Notre Dame we knew, is still standing and is now a building of which the city is proud.
