The Young Marguerites’ Christmas Party

Sr. Keiko Mine, CND

On December 13, 2014, Fukushima convent hosted the Christmas party of the “Marguerite Group” of Meijigakuen Middle and High-School students. Thirty-seven young students filled the chapel.

The gathering began in prayer. Then a Catholic student, acting as animator, read a text which explained why Jesus came into the world. This was followed by the reading of the nativity story from the Bible and the singing of Christmas songs.

This was followed by the story of Genzo Mizuno , the “Blinking Poet.” As a child, he contracted dysentery which left him paralyzed and unable to speak. The only way he had to communicate was by blinking his eyes. His mother created a table showing the letters of the Japanese alphabet. Batting his eyelids would enable his mother to read the letters he wanted to communicate. He put his life in God’s hands and praised Him through his poems. He died at the age of 47. Everyone in attendance was moved by the poet’s positive way of living.

The second part of the celebration was held in the dining room. We enjoyed Christmas cookies and other home-made snacks. The party ended with “O Holy Night” sung by the school choir.
