Petition as part of the COP15 (Biodiversity) and COP26 (Climate)

Dominik Tremblay-Perron

I am writing to invite you to sign the “Healthy Planet, Healthy People” Petition initiated by GCCM. By this, four requests are presented to the leaders who will attend the international environmental meetings this fall.

This petition pertains to the COP15 on Biodiversity (October 2021). It will bring together the signatory countries of the Convention on Biodiversity. This includes all countries where we operate except for the United States. The petition also concerns the COP26 which will bring together all the signatory countries of the Paris Agreement. All the countries where the CND operates have signed it.

The four requests are as follows:

  • Work together to fight the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis;
  • Limit global warming to 1.5 °C and promise to maintain remaining biodiversity;
  • Ensure fair global action, including support for the people most affected;
  • Protect and respect human rights, including the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities in action for the climate and biodiversity.

As these requests agree with the 2015 congregational stand on climate, our mission orientation and the principles of Laudato Si’, you are invited to sign the petition.

  • • English: https://thecatholicpetition.org/

Please sign before October 1, 2021 and have it circulated within your networks for as many signatures as possible. The more we sign, the more these calls to take action will be heard by our political leaders. Thank you in advance for your commitment to this fight for social and climate justice.
