Canonization of Marguerite Bourgeoys - October 31, 1982

Sisters of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame

Message of His Holiness John Paul II on the occasion of the audience granted to the Pilgrims, Saturday, October 30, 1982, in the Paul VI Auditorium at the Vatican

Dear Pilgrims from France and Canada,

In a sprit of joy and pride you are preparing for the celebration of the canonization of Blessed Marguerite Bourgeoys and Blessed Jeanne Delanoue.

[…] The event of canonization gives rise to a question that may be addressed to your communities, whether on the diocesan or national level. Is it reasonable to assume that men and women can attain holiness in today’s world? Do people aspire to holiness? Do they take the means to become saints?

[…] Of the many Canadian women who have been beatified, Marguerite Bourgeoys is the first to be canonized. Her aim was to lay the foundations for a new world in the NEW WORLD. May you continue, my dear Canadian people, to build on those same foundations.

I wish to extend special greetings to the daughters of Marguerite Bourgeoys. May God render fruitful your apostolate of education among young people. May he bless you in your collaboration with parents and former students, and in an efforts that are directed to the well-being of families. God’s help be with you in your organization of programs of instruction for those preparing for the reception of the sacraments, and in whatever you do to contribute to the betterment of society.

[…]

Lastly, I would express in a general way my sincere hope that many priests, religious and lay persons will profit from the example of Marguerite Bourgeoys. May they effectively acknowledge her missionary zeal, her interest in bringing out the best in the young people with whom she worked, and her efforts to prepare families for a happy, Christian life. We have great need, have we not, for clear-sighted aims such as she had, and for her spirit of unfailing devotedness, in order to ensure a wholesome atmosphere in which today’s school can accomplish its task.

In blessing you, as I do with all my heart, I bless also those whom you represent here, your families, your religious congregations, your parish and diocesan communities, and in particular, all who are going through a time of suffering. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
