Indian Horse

Eleanor McCloskey, CND

Indian Horse, is based on the award-winning novel by Richard Wagamese.

The movie shows, with deep compassion, the long-lasting effects of the cultural alienation experienced in the misguided educational goals pursued in our country in the 60’s. In a residential school, young Saul Indian Horse secretly teaches himself to skate and he learns hockey. His talent for the sport is what gets him out of his surroundings and into a Northern Ontario native hockey league. In his adult life, he struggles with memories of his past.

Even as his success and opportunities increase in a professional hockey league, Saul keeps meeting racial prejudice and hostility, especially at the rink. Drawing on the spirituality found in his own heritage, and a support group, Saul is able to move towards healing. This story is one of human strength and resilience and causes us to reflect deeply on our understanding of each other’s life experience.
