STATEMENT REGARDING THE 2017 GENERAL ELECTION IN HONDURAS

Región Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

The Congrégation de Notre-Dame sisters in Honduras with the Episcopal Conference, the Franciscan Brothers, other organizations and institutions, and the Honduran people all share concerns about the current situation in that country.

Our Christian conscience and our faith in Jesus Christ encourage us to speak and, like Mary in the Magnificat, proclaim the greatness of the Lord to ordinary people. At the same time, we need to challenge the oppressive structures that do not take into account the most vulnerable and the defenseless. Therefore:

1. We join in gratitude to God for an electoral process and its large participation from its citizens, particularly the youth, who greatly desire to bring about transformation that will benefit the country.

2. We acknowledge the importance of the international observers who regard the electoral process as an organized and peaceful process. We are also grateful to these observers for identifying some irregularities.

3. We support the request that the Supreme Electoral Tribunal provide truthful information. We are very concerned with the climate of uncertainty resulting from the lack of information, are and in profound disagreement with the delays in announcing the elections results.

4. We believe that in this climate of uncertainty and confrontation, misinformation is being used to manipulate the poor, confuse and create instability among the population and generally unsettle the Honduran people.

5. As followers of Christ, we believe that communication that is based on justice and truth is necessary to obtain the peace we all desire.

6. We join all petitions demanding that the elective will of the Honduran people be respected in a democratic and transparent way, and that there be no further delays.

7. We accompany the Honduran people in their desire and struggle for a just, free and peaceful Honduras.

Rooted in Jesus Christ in the defense of all endangered life,
