Launch of the Application Montréal, What a story! …along the river at Maison Saint-Gabriel

Stéphanie Manseau

Around midday, Wednesday, May 3, the Métayères room at Maison Saint-Gabriel was packed for the launch of the new mobile application: Montréal, What a story! … along the river. As its name indicates, this app was created to help us discover the history of Montréal in the place where it all began – along the river. We are invited to download the application from and to follow a route that transports us through space and time. As we make our way, there are approximately 300 old photos to look at, 35 individuals to meet and about twenty quizzes to do.

The fruit of the collaboration of four Montréal boroughs (Sud-Ouest, Verdun, LaSalle, Lachine) and four museums (Maison Saint-Gabriel, Lachine Museum, Maison Nivard-De Saint-Dizier, Fleming Mill), this historic route is one of the legacies of the 375th anniversary of Montréal. Each of the four borough mayors who were present highlighted the very rich heritage of these Montréal neighbourhoods situated along the river and the Lachine Canal. They stressed the importance of knowing this history in order to better embrace the future. Sister Madeleine Juneau, CND, Executive Director of Maison Saint-Gabriel, talked about everyday life in these neighbourhoods that were originally agricultural and then became working-class. She mentioned how, in addition to the river, greenery also unifies this territory and how these boroughs and museums share common roots – did not Maison Nivard-De Saint-Dizier once belong to the Congrégation de Notre-Dame? This house, along with Maison Le Ber-Le Moyne (Lachine Museum) and Maison Saint-Gabriel, the jewels of Montreal’s built heritage, are three of the oldest buildings in the city.

You can use the app from the comfort of your home, but the best way to experience it is by walking the streets, smartphone in hand, and discovering in situ the traces of the not-so-distant past, from the day-to-day to important events.
