World Day of Prayer for Vocations 2017

Eleanor McCloskey, CND

May 7, 2017 marks the 54th annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations — a day when the Church everywhere asks for special prayer for the ministers of the Church and for “young men and women to hear and respond generously to the Lord’s call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, [and] societies of apostolic life.”

Statistics show that 73% of women and men professing final vows participated in one or more parish activities and 88% served in one or more parish ministries before entering religious life.  Do young people have these opportunities? Are they invited?

Pope Francis released a message entitled "Led by the Spirit for Mission,” which is available on the Vatican website. This Message states that "Commitment to mission is not something added on to the Christian life as a kind of decoration, but is instead an essential element of faith itself. A relationship with the Lord entails being sent out into the world as prophets of his word and witnesses of his love."

This day would be an occasion to reflect on our own vocation, to continue being grateful for the opportunities we have had, and still have, to be joyful witnesses to that kind of relationship.
