In solidarity with indigenous people

KAIROS has invited us to participate in an advocacy and solidarity action. We are taking action for right relations with Indigenous peoples and to help protect Canada's waters from recent changes in environmental legislation. Idle No More and other Canadian Indigenous movements have called attention to the impacts of Bills C-38 and C-45 (Omnibus Budget Bills) and how this legislation threatens Canadian waterways. We can join Indigenous action on this campaign by writing a letter to our MPs and/or taking other actions. Please visit national-action-to-protect-water/ for more details on KAIROS' Our Waters, Our Life campaign.

We can also participate in a very simple, brief act of solidarity in our churches on June 2 or 9. On one of these dates, KAIROS is inviting us to do the following:

  • Gather a small bottle of water from your local water source.
  • Label it with the name of the water source, the name of the Indigenous traditional territory if you know it, and the name of your community.
  • You can notify the Church Community by using the bulletin insert you find here.
  • Dedicate the water at a regular worship service by reading the prayer in the above Bulletin announcement.
  • Mail the water by June 11 to the Ottawa office:

Please notify the JPIC office if you will be participating. This will help KAIROS plan the national "Gathering of the Waters" action in Ottawa on June 20. Your water will be used in a collective action so that your voices, your watershed and the Indigenous traditional territory where you live are represented physically and spiritually. For more information contact JPIC.
