OK Clean Water Project

WATER IS LIFE! Is a constant refrain in village after village in the highlands of the North West Region of Cameroon. These highlands contain many springs of clean water yet many people, inded whole villages, still do not have access to potable water.

How did this all come about? In 2002, an article in DIALOGUE, a CND publication, sparked a discussion among a small group of widows and single mothers in Tobin. The women's discussion  recounting the difficulties of living and raising children without access to clean water was printed in response to this article on water. While water is available in the village many people could not afford the cost of the connection. Consequently many families continued to rely on the stream for water. The women's stories motivated the small group of readers in Ottawa to try to help. Their self-appointed task was to find ways to finance the cost of helping families obtain a connection with the existing water system. This initial response enabled seventeen families to have a standtap bringing clean water into their compound.

The news that help had come spread quickly. Soon applications were arriving from nearby villages for assistance in extending their water-borne water systems to quarters, or neighbourhoods, that lacked access to clean water. And thus, what began as a small gesture to help a few families grew over the past ten years bringing clean water to thirty-four villages!

Cathy Molloy CND, and the Cameroonian engineer, Edwin Visi, work with the villagers and  the  water technicians to assess their needs and possibilities and to ensure the quality of the work. Funds raised are used to purchase pipes and build catchments for the water. Their focus is on sustainability of each village project. The people receiving the pipes prepare the trenches and fill them in after the pipes are laid.  All the work is done by the local people!

In Ottawa, the OK Clean Water Project Committee founded by Norma McCoy, CND, works to support this life-giving project by organizing "fun"-raising events, preparing newsletters to inform others about the project and speaking to students.  As well we have many generous donors who give online or by mail and support our "fun"-raising events.
