ASSOCIATE NEWS - Sr. Joan Mahoney

NERA (New England Region Associates) November 5th Meeting was attended by Associate, Carol Lombard.

"I recently attended the NERA gathering at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MA with Sr. Joan Mahoney. The Associates and Sisters who attended were from all parts of New England. We discussed hopes, challenges and initiatives of the Associate program in 2011 going into 2012. The panel discussions were very informative. The table talks were lively and enthusiastic.  The Associates brought to the discussions vitality and strong commitment to their respective Associate commitments.  The day was filled with many new challenging ideas.  Meeting with other Associates and Sisters with the same visions was very affirming."

Indications of the constant evolution of the associate relationship across the twelve congregations in attendance were:

  • change from sister-associate model to partnership;
  •  associates owning charism, even expanding  the charism;
  • importance of continual development of associate leadership,
  • movement towards associates being coordinators or co-coordinators.

Common concerns for the Associate Relationship were:

  • finding balance in personal life;
  • unity without uniformity at local, national and global levels;
  • attracting  younger members;
  • aging population of sisters and associates;
  • peripheral associates; how keep them involved.

Christmas Giving:  In addition to the many ways Associates are involved personally and locally in giving this season, a couple of communal projects of Associates are:

  • Project Appalachia Truck Packing, Saturday, December 10, 9 am to 1 pm, St. Thomas Aquinas, 1719 Post Road in Fairfield, CT. The Benedictine Grange Associates would love to have your help!
  • Associate Christine Mc Michael and family are involving all the Rhode Island Associates in filling a truckload of donations for the Rhode Island Food Bank.
