Book review: 'Speaking Christian' by Marcus Borg

A new book this summer has been Speaking Christian by Marcus Borg. (Harper One, 2011, $27.99). To someone (like me) who tends to be sticky about words and what our words really mean, this book has been helpful and hopeful. Borg shows how the words we use in our sacred texts and stories and in our prayers, have taken on meanings quite different from the understanding the early Christians would have had. Saviour, creator, sacrifice, are examples. The word God “does not refer to a being separate from the universe, but to an encompassing sacred reality all around us and within us.” (Chapter 5, p. 68).

This would be, I think, an excellent book for group reading. There are 25 discussion questions provided at the end. The 25 chapters are short and reader‐friendly. Information is presented without a textbook “lecture” approach.
