PEACE & JUSTICE NEWS: death penalty

There are some new developments in the fight to abolish the death penalty. A bill to do so has passed both houses in Illinois and has been sent to the Governor for his signature.

The Coalition to repeal the death penalty in Connecticut is gearing up for this legislative session. You may remember that last year, Governor Rell vetoed a bill to repeal the death penalty. Sr. Rita Rompre, Sr. Louise Finn, and I attended a meeting in Hartford sponsored by the coalition. Kirk Bloodsworth, a man who spent eight years on death row for a crime he did not commit, was the speaker.

While most in attendance did not need convincing to abolish the death penalty, his witness certainly renewed our energy to achieve that goal this year with our new governor. Connecticut and Illinois are among the 35 states with the death penalty.

Is your state on this list?
