Immacolata Cassetta

Last Saturday, August 26th, 2017 was indeed a very special day for the Congrégation de Notre-Dame (CND) community as many sisters, associates and family welcomed Sister Libby Osgood into the novitiate. What a wonderful celebration. From beginning to end, we had an opportunity to engage in a prayerful ritual of acceptance.

Libby made her way into the sacred space of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, accompanied by her PEI CND community who affirmed her desires to enter. We recalled the readings from Jeremiah 29:11-14 (read by Della Gaudet, CND), Luke 2:39-46 (read by Catherine Molloy,CND) and the Constitutions, P. 10 (read by Mary Ann Powers, CND). We heard Libby’s “yes” to the question asked by Ann Broderick, CND, “Are you ready to respond to God’s invitation to continue your journey with the Congregation of Notre Dame by entering the novitiate?”

After Libby’s resounding response and signed the Act of Entrance, we offered Libby sacred treasures of our community: The CND Novice Cross (offered by Maureen MacIsaac CND), Marguerite’s Writings (offered by Joan Marie Chiasson,CND), and our Constitutions (offered by Marie L. Arsenault, CND).

Margaret Giroux, CND wrapped Libby with a shawl of daisies she made as a gesture of promised comfort of our love, prayer, and support. Your postcards, from Visitation and Blessed Sacrament Provinces, were presented to her by Pat Graham, CND. For sure, the many, many notes will nourish her spirits in the many days to come!

Her parents, Rich and Maribeth Osgood and our newest member, Janet Lawrence, CND blessed Libby’s personhood, including her head, heart, and feet. We followed by extending our hands over Libby and offered a blessing of support.

Finally, we sang with loud voices, Kathleen Deignan’s, CND song, “The More I Follow You without Fear” assuring Libby that she is not alone on this journey of becoming.

While a simple and enthusiastic reception followed, we ended our weekend of welcome on the following evening. We shared a meal together with our CND guests from the Maritimes and with Libby’s parents. During our meal (and the breaking of the bread), we “participated” metaphorically on a prayerful walk to Emmaus, remembering the events of Libby’s entrance ceremony. We pondered together, “Were not our hearts burning?”

And, yes our hearts burned with excitement as we shared the many blessings of the day and weekend! With that, the invitation to those gathered was to spread the Good News of what just happened as they made their way home. Magnificat!

All was gift and we, the Novitiate Community, are grateful to each of you for your love, prayer, and support on this journey that we have just begun with our newest sister, Libby Osgood. We count on your prayers as she continues her discernment. May Libby’s heart grow in love!
